The Help
Setting takes place in the 1960s in Jackson Mississippi. The movie takes us back to a time when the United States was still very much segregated. The African American community served as the hired hand to the Caucasian middle and upper class. Skeeter is a white female graduate from college who wants to secure a job as a journalist for the NY times. She befriends Clark (a maid) and starts asking for advice for her cleaning column in the paper so that her editor can see her work. Eventually this becomes something much bigger as her real interest is to find out exactly how the hired hands are treated. She wants to take their thoughts and turn them into a book. Faced with the possibility of loosing more than their jobs, the women are reluctant to share these secrets with anyone. The hired hands finally agree to share their stories, however, are sworn to secrecy as there is a high cost to pay for unveiling the truths that go on in Caucasian homes. During this secret writing session Skeeter becomes friends with these maids and caretakers, sharing in their stories of happiness, pain, and even sorrow. This drama is one for everyone to see! It allows you to view the 1960’s era from many different views. You are sure to laugh, cry, and empathize with the women in this movie. The help is a must see for family, friends, and loved ones.
